A Chance to Say Thanks and Give Back

Many HDFS students share their talents and energies assisting fellow undergraduates by serving as teaching or research assistants, peer advisors, or working in the Early Childhood Center. In appreciation of students who help enhance the undergraduate education of others, HDFS faculty members Dr. Kevin Oltjenbruns and Dr. Jill Kreutzer established the HDFS Undergraduate Student Scholarship to honor students whose volunteer efforts have made a difference in the educational experiences of his/her fellow students.

The HDFS Undergraduate Student Scholarship is a terrific way for HDFS alums, current majors, faculty, and friends of the department to say thank you to those who give of themselves to strengthen the HDFS program. Contributing to this fund may be a way for many of you to honor Jill Kreutzer and Janet Fritz, retired faculty, for their many years of service to students, and also honor long-time faculty member Kevin Oltjenbruns, retiring in June 2005. Your gift of $25, $50, $100 or more is greatly appreciated and will help build this fund, which reflects the value HDFS places on its students and his/her contributions to the department.

Contribution Expands Graduate Training

One of our greatest needs is to expand gerontological training at Colorado State University to include graduate students. Columbine Health Systems contributes to the Department to do just that. A portion of the $10,000 in scholarship money donated by Columbine will be used to recruit top-quality master's and doctoral students, and to promote thesis and dissertation research on aging and long-term care.

Our undergraduate interdisciplinary studies program in gerontology has been in existence for more than 20 years. Since 1980, we have trained more than 200 students who have - subsequent to graduation - made contributions to the quality of life of older adults and their families, both locally as well as nationally. Some of our gerontology students have not only completed internships operated by Columbine Health Systems, they have also found employment at Columbine after graduation.
