Practicum / Internship

Students in HDFS are provided with two significant opportunities for experiential learning. Early in their degree programs, typically as sophomores or juniors, students participate in a practicum experience that exposes them to hands-on experience in programs that serve youth, families, and the aging. Toward the end of the program, HDFS majors participate in an internship, which is a more intensive work experience in a setting closely aligned with one’s career interest.

A mandatory meeting for students planning to take practicum and internship is held the semester prior to enrollment. For example, students planning on taking practicum or internship in the spring, would attend the meeting during the prior fall semester. Similarly, students planning on taking practicum or internship in the fall or summer would attend the meeting during the previous spring. In this meeting, students find out about practicum and internship requirements, choose sites, and fill out paperwork for mandatory background checks.

• *Please note: ALL students wishing to enroll in HDFS 286 (Practicum) or HDFS 477/488 (Internship) will need to complete and pass a CCIC and NCIC background check, PRIOR to the first day of class. If you do not have a completed background check, you will be not be able to continue in the class that semester. This meeting is advertised on flyers posted throughout the Gifford building, in the advising office, and is sent to all HDFS majors via the advising office’s email notification system, “HDFS Hot Tips.”
